What is cancer?
Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body. It can start almost anywhere in the body, which is made up of trillions of cells. Normally, human cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place.
Cancer develops when this orderly process breaks down. Cells become abnormal, ignore signals to stop dividing, and instead form a mass of tissue called a tumor (in most cancers). Not all tumors are cancerous — benign tumors do not spread, but malignant tumors can invade nearby tissues and spread through the blood and lymph systems to other parts of the body (metastasis).
Cancer is not just one disease, but many — over 100 types exist. Each type behaves differently depending on where it originates, how aggressive it is, and how it responds to treatment.
